The BCCI selection committee, lead by Ajit Agarkar, will have to make a difficult decision when selecting the team for the T20s against Afghanistan. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are ready to compete in the World Cup in June. They haven’t played T20 for India since November 2022, however.
According to media reports, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will be rested. Meanwhile, a senior BCCI source claims that Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are not fit to play in the Afghanistan series.
“Everything will be decided on the basis of the first month of the IPL,” a top BCCI source said on condition of anonymity to PTI. “Workload management and core group monitoring during IPL,” a source told PTI.
The BCCI is aware that, once the IPL concludes in May, it cannot order IPL teams to use players for the T20 World Cup. It will not be possible to ask teams to limit a player’s game time unless there is an injury. Approximately 25 to 30 players will be analyzed for the World Cup team during the IPL.
In the IPL, injuries or fitness difficulties might require the use of backups at each position. The only player without a clear replacement is Hardik Pandya, who is expected to head the Mumbai Indians for the first time.
